Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
