What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
