Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
