A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailboats loaded with relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search Operations Deployed

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of nine total personnel, per a military release.

The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort stated.

The nine-person crew are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.

"The group is working closely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Relief Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.

Larger International Context

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the country began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" shortages of supplies, with more than 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have increased in recent months, with statements from various representatives emphasizing the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.

In response to recent statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using every available asset at its reach to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
