The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
