The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement follows difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows No Drought

A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that all of California is free from any level of drought. This development resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The journey here involved severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. State experts have emphasized that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
