I got so angry when somebody said, regarding the famous participants. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they vitalize these narratives.”

Nuanced Narrative

Still, no contemporary observers remain, modern media required the filmmakers to depend substantially on primary texts, integrating individual perspectives of nearly 200 individual historic figures. Initial complaints and protests aimed at the crown by American colonists in 13 fractious colonies soon descended into a brutal civil conflict, pitting family members against each other and turning communities into battlegrounds. In episode two, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The primary misunderstanding about the American Revolution is that it was something that unified Americans. This ignores the truth that Americans fought each other.”

For him, the revolutionary narrative that “generally is overwhelmed by emotionalism and idealization and remains shallow and doesn’t have the respect the historical reality, and all the participants and the extensive brutality.

The historian argues, a revolution that proclaimed the revolutionary principle of the unalienable rights of people; a brutal civil war, separating rebels and supporters; and a worldwide engagement, the fourth in a series of struggles among European powers for dominance in the New World.
