Sheffield Wednesday Faces a 'Significant Problem', Says New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - independent football regulator the regulator's chair

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties represent a a "significant problem" and the new football authority is seeking powers to look into club affairs in such situations, the recently named head the regulator has announced.

During an extensive discussion, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four supporters' associations connected to the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The team have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in the current year, with the club delaying salary disbursements on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the historic institutions for English football and this week we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they need to be investigated and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Leadership Concerns

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Failure to pay player wages on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in mid-year, stopping Wednesday from completing any player acquisitions for the subsequent signing windows, although those limitations were removed in August.

Official's Viewpoint

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where people are committed to a local institution that has been part of their lives in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for the club's situation, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Inquired if the authority might compel an owner to sell a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the chairman responded: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is start getting involved with an particular organization, an particular chairman, without being in a position to cooperate with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you review the record of the sport, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, a small minority, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the approach they have taken toward their clubs and ultimately refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

Kogan met with delegates from multiple organizations to explain the responsibilities of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "significant participation" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the world of football gets it wrong, the significant advances achieved necessary will vanish swiftly," Kogan said.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we need to continue the progress.

"Considerable investment entering the sport and has been invested for the past two decades, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to take a really clear view on potential dangers and naturally, of the immediate future."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Top flight officials resisted the creation of a regulator because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the success and growth as an economic entity of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the worry about compromising the Premier League as a premium product of England. But at the same time, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "thorough examination" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he revealed he contributed money to the Labour Party in 2020.

The official contributed funds to Culture Secretary the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
