During a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “unbroken” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and asserted their partnership were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have tried to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its historical ties with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier American measures, including the introduction of tariffs on India due to its purchase of Russian oil.
“Moscow remains a reliable supplier of fuel and everything needed for the development of India’s economy,” he remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue ensuring the steady supply of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Modi, while not mentioning oil directly, reinforced the theme by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and crucial foundation of the bilateral alliance.”
Questioning US Interference
In the lead-up to the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had questioned Washington's stance regarding India's dealings with Russia. The president questioned, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India have the same privilege?”
Putin's arrival represented his initial trip to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a clear attempt to project that the bond between the heads of state persisted strongly.
