Forecasters are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
