Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being called the most significant changes to tackle unauthorized immigration "in recent history".

This package, inspired by the tougher stance implemented by the Danish administration, renders refugee status conditional, limits the legal challenge options and includes entry restrictions on countries that block returns.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

People granted asylum in the UK will have permission to reside in the country temporarily, with their situation reassessed every 30 months.

This approach follows the policy in the Scandinavian country, where refugees get two-year permits and must request extensions when they end.

The government claims it has begun supporting people to repatriate to Syria by choice, following the removal of the Syrian government.

It will now investigate mandatory repatriation to that country and other nations where people have not typically been sent back to in the past few years.

Asylum recipients will also need to be settled in the UK for two decades before they can apply for indefinite leave to remain - increased from the existing 60 months.

Additionally, the authorities will introduce a new "work and study" residence option, and urge refugees to secure jobs or begin education in order to switch onto this pathway and earn settlement faster.

Exclusively persons on this employment and education route will be able to sponsor family members to join them in the UK.

Authorities also plans to terminate the process of allowing multiple appeals in refugee applications and replacing it with a comprehensive assessment where every argument must be submitted together.

Terminating Accommodation Assistance

The home secretary will rescind the mandatory requirement to offer asylum seekers with aid, ending guaranteed housing and weekly pay.

Support would still be available for "persons without means" but will be denied from those with permission to work who fail to, and from persons who commit offenses or refuse return instructions.

Those who "purposefully render themselves penniless" will also be rejected for aid.
