Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in armed forces or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the statutes or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our United States with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the security of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the statement added.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who value this nation and made an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "Every American must unite and censure the former president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American β without partisan consideration β should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of Congress advising troops to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and decide all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the representative said. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
