The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
