Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

The scientist and activist, a women's health researcher, was a passenger on the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
