A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
